John 1:5 – “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

The storm raged outside as my sons and I watched 70’s horror films in the living room. We could hear rain beat repeatedly on the window pain and thunder roar across the sky. It had been raining heavily for hours, so we were prepared to stay inside for the rest of the evening.

Two of the boys laid sprawled across the floor, one reclined in the love seat, and I was nestled on the couch under my favorite blanket. We watched closely as the large killer shark emerged frighteningly out of the sea, its mouth opened wide, showcasing its terrifyingly sharp teeth. Just as the shark went in for its prey, the room went pitch black and I screamed. We were surrounded by complete darkness. We were all a bit frightened as we jumped up and called out to see if everyone was okay.

Peering out the window gave no comfort. What a time to have a neighborhood power outage. I was not a happy camper, but we couldn’t just sit in the dark. Having had power outages before, we knew exactly where to get a source of light. We carefully navigated through the familiar areas and grabbed candles and flashlights. After a few seconds, the light from the candles illuminated the room and we could see again. We spent the next few hours playing cards, talking and laughing. It wasn’t the ideal situation, but it turned out to be a great evening of family time.

Sometimes as Christians, we find ourselves unexpectedly thrown into dark situations. Those moments can seem frightening because we spend so much time looking at this horror-filled world we live in, and it can cause us to only see pending doom. Those dark times can be overwhelming and scary, but we can’t choose to just sit in the dark. We must seek out light! Jesus tells us that He is the Light… He who has already conquered the darkest of darkness, and even death could not hold him. .

Rev. Anderson reminded us Sunday that, like Isaiah, we can see God in our most difficult and trying times. Choose to seek the light of Jesus when things go dark. God’s word promises us that no matter what, darkness will be defeated. Just look up to heaven and see God high and mighty on the throne… ready to bring light and victory!

Heavenly Father, I am in a dark season in my life and I am looking to you to be my light and my guide. Thank you for giving me your word, so that in moments of darkness, I can go directly to your personal source of light! Give me peace and strength to make it through. In Your son’s Jesus most precious name, Amen!
