Proverbs 19:21 - " Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails."
As we prepare to close out the 2016 year, many people are all too welcoming for the 2017 year to roll in. I have heard it said many times that 2016 was one of the worst years experienced and people are so over it. We've lost some great influential people, whether personally or globally. We watched as America imploded during one of the most contentious elections in our history.
We witnessed many lives being taken at the hands of those sworn to protect and serve. A piece of each of us slowly died as we scratched and clawed our way through 2016.
To combat 2016, as we do every year, many people will make New Years resolutions to make themselves and life in general, better. I challenge everyone today, as you go forth and make your plans and resolutions, resolve to make God's will and purpose the foundation to every goal you set. It can be difficult sticking to some of the things we plan, because many times we rely on our own will, discipline and strength. If we allow God go before and be in the midst of everything we do, we can rely on his strength to make it through. We have to find a way to make living for Christ more than just a resolution, but an everyday part of our lives.
2016 wasn't all bad. We had more baptisms, grown new leaders and preachers, couples committed to putting God first and so much more. We didn't solve racism or sexism issues, or gun violence or police brutality. The successes don't make up for the bad times, but it's worth remembering that God has been with us and he has not left us. As you push forward to enter into the new year, will you take the same old habits expecting different results? Will you make your plans based on what you want or according to God's purpose? It's okay to have a plan, just remember that God's purpose will prevail. So if your plans align with God's purpose, you can look forward to a new peace in the new year. Happy New Year!
Heavenly Father, I look to you and your will and purpose as I enter this new year. I give my plans and concerns over to you, and I will trust in what you will have for me in this new year. I plead the blood of Jesus over my life and whatever is ahead. In Jesus's might name. Amen
